<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Welcome back everyone! I'm excited to share another Vintage & Classic block with from Fat Quarter Shop. Their tutorials are well written and you get to make cute quilt blocks. This one is call Union Square. I used the stripes from Daysail again, just like in <a href="https://acreativepursuit.blogspot.com/2018/04/flying-geese-straight-furrows-classic.html" target="_blank">my previous V&C block</a>. I think I'll eventually put all these block together into some kind of sampler quilt and the stripes will make them feel cohesive.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
When I was getting ready to make this block I knew I wanted the center to have the strips running diagonally. That freed me from having to worry about everything running in the same direction. I just cut the pieces I needed and started sewing. As quilters, we sometimes get a bit scared to use those directional prints in our stash. But I think my finished block show that its okay to go a different way.<br />
<br />
If you like to make your own block check out <a href="https://blog.fatquartershop.com/classic-vintage-union-square-free-pattern-video-tutorial/" target="_blank">Fat Quarter Shop's blog post</a> for the pattern. Or watch their <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXLBH4HoMpA" target="_blank">video on YouTube</a>. Don't forget to use t<span style="font-family: inherit;">he hashtag #UnionSquareQuilt on Instagram to share your block!</span><br />

I've finally solidified my Make Nine plans for this year! Well, technically this list actually has 10 items but I started a couple of dresses in December and I want to keep myself accountable for finishing them. There is no particular order to my list and if you want to know
more about each pattern just follow the links. This year's list includes a few carry overs because the only items I completed on <a href="https://acreativepursuit.blogspot.com/2018/01/2018makenine.html" target="_blank">last year's list</a> were a Blackwood Cardigan and a Shirt No. 1 from my bonus list. That's not to say I didn't make anything else I just got distracted by other patterns. As a way to keep myself
organized I decide to include pictures of each fabric I plan to use.<br />

This is a cross woven chambray(ish) fabric, meaning that two different colors of thread were used in the weaving process. It's got a beautiful texture and just enough weight to give the Esme top structure with out being stiff.</div>

This is a stretch velvet from Joann Fabrics. I have actually started this dress. I had intended to wear it to my husband's work Christmas party but he ended by getting a nasty cold so we didn't go. I pushed it to the back burner in favor of getting other Christmas projects done. But I want it finished because I just know its gonna be so comfy!<br />

This is a really old double knit from Joann's, that is completely reversible. I think it might be fun to do mashup using both sides when I make my hoodie.<br />

Somehow I lost track of what day it was and forgot to get this post up for you! This is the Fat Quarter Shop's newest Shortcut Quilt pattern....Fat Eighth Fruitcake. You can find the pattern over on <a href="https://blog.fatquartershop.com/shortcut-quilt-fat-eighth-fruitcake/" target="_blank">their post from yesterday</a>. For my quilt I used a fat eight bundle of Midnight Garden by One Canoe Two for Moda. I love these colors!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used <a href="https://smile.amazon.com/June-Tailor-4-Inch-16-Inch-Quarter/dp/B000YZ7SIS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1543938270&sr=8-3&keywords=quarter+cut+ruler" target="_blank">this Quarter Cut ruler</a> to speed up the cutting process. Accuracy was an added bonus!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This quilt can definitely be chain pieced and here's a look a how I sped up the trimming process. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4ZzJdpd__r9kp02FJJqO0Dxp4NM1tdldxGdmo0phUgaGRpfjJtCXGv10VqwfnA5C6jIGWgiH24GhssOxI6lbYlzVfW0kdq4MoUkOEIr9G8I8bF0wj06Q5jVK3nmkhuINhRMFYgCo_qqk/s400/20181018_074244.jpg" width="300" /></div>
<br />
First I line up the stitch lines and then use a long ruler to cut a 1/4" seam allowance. I was able to cut to trim 4 blocks at once.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The finishing directions were posted by Fat Quarter Shop in July and I really thought I was going to be able to actually get this one done on time.<br />
<br />
I got all my smaller blocks set on point and things were looking good. I decided to give all my blocks are really good pressing since several had gotten a bit wrinkly over the last few months. Once they were all pressed...reality hit. My big blocks aren't all the same size, most are close and I'll be able to work around the differences but one is significantly smaller than the rest. I admit that I felt a defeated. I thought I'd been so careful with my cutting and piecing. So I put it all away and went on vacation. When we got back I pulled it all out again and shared this post on Instagram.<br />

<span>Getting away and clearing my head, let me change my mindset and I've got a plan to get this top done. I have enough fabric left to remake this block, being very careful to get it the right size. Once the top is ready, I think I want to send it off to be longarm quilted.</span>Heather OBrienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02919379139267163519noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6922883411059372660.post-44752643653242805302018-06-26T06:10:00.001-07:002018-06-26T06:10:03.742-07:00Clementine Quilt Along - June BlocksI'm a day late getting these blocks posted for you all to enjoy. I don't know why by June always seems to get away from me...it could be the end of school chaos or that we have 4 family birthdays this month or that my oldest spent a week at Boy Scout camp.<br />
<br />
Anyway...<br />
<br />
What you really came to see is the beautiful blocks that complete the Clementine Quilt! This month's block is called Strawberry Star. Check out <a href="https://blog.fatquartershop.com/2018/06/clementine-quilt-along-month-6-strawberry-star.html" target="_blank">the blog post</a> at Fat Quarter Shop to download the pattern and help raise money for St. Jude Children's Hospital.<br />

Welcome back! It's time for the next set of blocks in the Clementine Quilt Along!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This months block are called Pineapple's Puzzle. These blocks have lots of hsts. I've got a suggestion for you if you are like me and want to put scraps to use...in the small block I was able to use corners that were trimmed off in previous months to create the hsts.</div>

Welcome back!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I can't believe we are already 4 months into the Clementine Quilt Along!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This month's block is called Coconut Cross. After looking at the previous blocks <a href="http://acreativepursuit.blogspot.com/2018/03/clemenitine-quilt-along-march-block.html" target="_blank">all together</a>, I decided to group the warm and cool colors together to help bring a bit more balance to the over all composition. I'm happy with the way they turned out. The smaller block got the cool colors and the larger block got the warm colors.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<img border="0" data-original-height="1579" data-original-width="1600" height="630" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikynhMUhg2wxsTQ08RPqPEqi1ELbctnb4g7sW49wTRsYSECyMXVTDsfn_hVCb9UXYOrNg_aUP5Q8T9XEeRkM9iMKjS237O-PVa-6SX18J-fQ3OHq5PjB-jGymQ0PwDtG-4lKsjO6xGzTU/s640/HeatherOBrien+_+WildGeeseStraightFurrows.JPG" width="640" /> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hi Everybody! Just posting a quick block for the Fat Quarter Shop's newest Classic & Vintage series. This one is called Flying Geese Straight Furrows. It's a pretty straight forward block of half square triangles and larger squares. I love doing these blocks because they are a great introduction to more traditional blocks done in fun ways. For my block I used all stash fabric, the stripes are from Daysail by Bonnie and Camille and the white is Kona.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can download the free pattern from Fat Quarter Shop's <a href="https://blog.fatquartershop.com/2018/04/classic-vintage-wild-geese-straight-furrows.html" target="_blank">blog post</a> and don't forget to check out the video tutorial. The pattern calls for Triangles on a Roll but if you don't have any on hand you can do the HSTs the traditional way. Another option would be to pop on over to the Freshly Pieced pattern shop and buy Lee's <a href="https://freshly-pieced-quilt-patterns.myshopify.com/collections/perfect-hsts" target="_blank">Perfect HSTs</a> *. I love that they come with multiple sizes and that I can print only what I need.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
Don't forget to take a look at the block that they other makers shared and use the hashtag #WildGeeseStraightFurrowsQuilt on Instagram to share what you make.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;"><span style="font-size: small;">*Disclaimer - I purchased this on my own and share it because I love it. I am no way affiliated with Freshly Pieced. </span></span><br />

<br />
Allow me to introduce...Broken Berries, the February addition to the Clementine Quilt Along for St. Jude Hospital. These two give me all the happy feelings! I just love the way the ombre fabrics are showing off in these blocks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXzzoh3daAGi_0UiwhtkAxROTSPspts4QISzpQaNlew91wSyU-DHRFpaoeX_Pml3YuEkqia8Vp3UnFTsZIxGRMfVKaZmOqnWZIzp_-DU2dxPt1DEZetOKwRUZQ6PEGHA5d9xYora_SdBE/s1600/DSC_0050.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1268" data-original-width="1600" height="505" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXzzoh3daAGi_0UiwhtkAxROTSPspts4QISzpQaNlew91wSyU-DHRFpaoeX_Pml3YuEkqia8Vp3UnFTsZIxGRMfVKaZmOqnWZIzp_-DU2dxPt1DEZetOKwRUZQ6PEGHA5d9xYora_SdBE/s640/DSC_0050.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
My goal is to use every one of the eight colors I chose, so there aren't any color repeats between the two different block sizes. I think this will give me a good spread of color in the finished quilt.<br />
<br />

<br />
Have you heard of the Classic and Vintage Series from Fat Quarter Shop? They take a classic block and give it a modern spin. The newest addition is the Hunter Star! I love this block and the design it makes when you repeat it throughout a quilt. If you want to make one of your own you can <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JFf6ld8x7M" target="_blank">watch the YouTube video</a> that guides you through the process or find the <a href="https://blog.fatquartershop.com/2018/02/classic-vintage-hunter-star.html" target="_blank">pattern download link on the FQS blog</a>.<br />
<br />
I actually made four block and joined them together to create the full star effect. Each quadrant is 9 1/2 inches unfinished, so all four make a decent sized block. I think I'm going to turn it into a pillow! My blocks are made from two fat quarters from Fig Tree & Co. and a coordinating solid.<br />

<br />
I shared this picture on Instagram and felt like I should share here too. Don't worry is your points don't match...perfection is overrated! Just enjoy the process!<br />

Hello! How are you? Are you excited to see all the wonderful blocks for the first month of the Clementine Quilt Along? I can't wait to take a look at the block made by all the other fantastic blogger that are part of sharing this project with you!</div>

I couldn't resist taking a couple of pictures in the snow we got last week. I think this one really captures the beautiful ombre effect of the V & Co. fabric I am using. You can check out <a href="https://acreativepursuit.blogspot.com/2017/12/clementine-quilt-long.html" target="_blank">my previous post</a> about the quilt along to see exactly which colors I am using. </div>

I heard about the #2018makenine after seeing a few of my favorite Instagram makers post collages showing what they want to make this year. After a bit of scrolling through the hashtag on Instagram I found Rochelle the creator behind the idea. If you'd like to read more about how the idea was conceived I encourage you to read her <a href="http://luckylucille.com/2017/12/2018-make-nine/" target="_blank">blog post</a>.</div>

I've made a list of links down below, in case you are interested in learning more about the individual patterns. So...</div>

I'm going to try making most of these from my stash of garment fabrics. The only one that I might have to buy for is the Oceanside Pants, I don't know that I have enough yardage. I've actually had my Blackwood Cardigan, Esme Top and Mississippi Ave. Dress cut out for a while so I think may increase my productivity. I made a bonus list just in case.<br />

I thought I'd better pop in and let you know that I'll be quilting along with the Fat Quarter Shop on their 2018 charity quilt. The Clementine Quilt is a stunning sampler quilt with fun blocks in varying sizes. It runs from January to July 2018,
with all the proceeds going to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.<br />

I've loved every quilt I've seen made from <a href="http://www.vanessachristenson.com/" target="_blank">V & Co's</a> beautiful ombre fabric but this is the first time that I'll be sewing with it. They just released another project in their Shortcut Quilts pattern line. This time the pattern uses mini charm packs (2.5 inch squares).<br />

I chose to make the table runner version that uses two mini charm packs. I picked Chestnut Street by Fig Tree & Co because I want to create a fall-ish version of the pattern. </div>

The team over at the Fat Quarter Shop is at it again! This time with another quilt in their Shortcut Quilt series. The newest pattern, <a href="https://blog.fatquartershop.com/2017/10/shortcut-quilt-fat-quarter-cobblestone.html" target="_blank">the Cobblestone quilt</a>, is fat quarter friendly and a great way to show off your favorite prints. <br />

<br />
When it came time to choose what fabric I wanted to use, there was no question for me. I knew it had to be Sweetwater's Hometown Christmas line. To say I'm a fan of their designs would be a bit of an understatement. Of the finished quilts in my house 3 are made from fabric they've designed, including one from <a href="http://acreativepursuit.blogspot.com/2013/01/count-down-to-christmas-quilt.html" target="_blank">their other Christmas line</a>. One of the things I enjoy about the way they design is the input they get from our quilting community.<br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The quilt comes together quickly and leaves hardly any scraps. My quilt finished at about 63" x 80" and is going to a great size for my whole family to snuggle under this winter.</div>

I did simple straight line quilting to start with and I'm planning to go back and add some hand quilting in 12 wt. thread. Not exactly sure but I'm thinking maybe some snowflakes or little trees. I love this binding fabric. It finished the quilt off perfectly.</div>

I have acquired quite a stash of fabric specifically saved for making clothes for my self and my kids. I began collecting and making with it when we lived in Alaska because finding unique, well fitting garments was difficult in our little town. Of course, we all know that stashes seem to grow faster than we can actually use them but I finally feel like I'm making a dent and getting more handmade items into my closet.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I recently watched a class on <a href="https://www.creativebug.com/" target="_blank">Creativebug</a> by Sonya Philip's the designer behind 100 Acts of Sewing. The class showed how to make her Shirt No. 1 pattern and a few really creative variations. Since I'm pretty much a jeans and t-shirt kinda girl, the simple silhouette of this top will help me up my game without being uncomfortable. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I was pretty confident that a straight up size L would fit me based on the fact that the pattern has a boxy shape, so I pulled out this great voile from an older Anna Maria Horner line. With only two pattern pieces to cut, this top came together really quickly. My only struggle was with the bias binding at the neckline...I had to try three times to get it to lay flat.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr64ve7PVurgd-VZSF0I6HfKeoIRAsPoC31aBXASFnfCOhaGpbfgmmnuwZz7lNGmE2EG9-jsLnmSoOD9JNQH__f2Gbo-V8Nb9fbwAVGM-3192bCdq732bwM-8xWjgUNJ7wZ6d7hgbYvr8/s640/IMG_20170927_124102.jpg" width="480" /> </div>

<br />
As you can tell it hits me higher on my hip, but since I'm fairly tall this wasn't a big surprise. I will probably length the top a bit the next time I make one and I want to make one with the contrasting yoke. I've already worn this one a couple of times and the voile will definitely make it easy to wear layered under a cardigan during Virginia's cooler months and in the summer when the humidity is hits.<br />

The Lady of the Lake block is the newest Fat Quarter Shop tutorial and pattern in their "Classic and Vintage Series". This block is quick to make following their great tutorial (which can be found on their free pattern page) or go watch their YouTube video <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNVOIVLsQQU" target="_blank">here</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifLZGIeo9beGkgWdSdbPJpamIm07TPiefyJJwUWKqsA251fhczXdas81XBUdGgWGG5iC6d_4ywWmLeUi-UZzcRsM4973rW85of5QVZPnLnxyIl0n6B6TglhresXfnZicGxFXBGFsrT4KQ/s640/DSC_0084.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
The pattern suggest using half square triangle paper but since I didn't have
any on hand I drew diagonal lines on my background fabric and stitched
on either side with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. After that I used my rotating mat to cut along my pencil lines. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLME3BxUJT4aVQkr1Ra324Wjn9r6DlRJSt52ossPxmb78pxOYHHU0QYUf41X4O2sFtChPw_A2PdYF-LvKS1oT5KSkQB5wT1BhWb1rZbeVNrm-uhNDCuMzELJao-9OP-TJtvB20aEBWj4k/s640/DSC_0087.JPG" width="640" /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKwamOl3AdHSOekuJudD5uUMKoHDu5w6F1ILSngZZKZ4ytTusYTkTTPOMDUZZG4ZhE18_UtHuxi9B1GPPYCsqSCV2oBh5sEUny16uWx1qayN8OkP3PcJCKeUcS1XzsGH2skVHNoR2rzAs/s640/DSC_0088.JPG" width="640" /></div>
Then I lined up the triangles with the 45 degree line and cut them all together, creating the required HSTs.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg69gDN7KDYMgZ3XVtGCzfYqoQ6pbbqIkFaFyY1DyzmVj1WXabwIK8vN5pZBv3bcQgVNi7jz_ycmsQBAEauCzO463v7Y_EItv77maq2xrZiLiMK7cX22KEpO7tPf3JB821lVI2eDuyUhdk/s640/DSC_0090.JPG" width="640" /></div>

A helpful tip if you don't have one of those fancy rulers for trimming block is to run several layers of washi tape down the back side of your ruler along the 45 degree line. It creates a little ridge that can rest up against the seam line making it easier to keep everything lined up while you trim.<br />
<br />

This pile of scraps was all I had from creating these blocks. There is really very little waste!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

So hopefully in a few days I'll be able to go pick up what I need and get the rest of my blocks made. My print fabric is a bundle of Amy Sinibaldi's Les Petits from Art Gallery.</div>

So, a couple of weeks ago I shared my Mermaid Mini....well that was actually the second mini that I made with a mermaid. The first was made for the Simply Mini Swap back in October 2015. Based on my partner's preferences I created an ocean themed mini. I created the ocean and coastline with the same curved cutting technique.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj2ndxoTZuvyOTe7KHRiCI3h-JHhv25pC8HPdCve3gO6oNhyphenhyphenvEjLAqqwaXj4nQ6LRMhpjwain9kFrYjbrOFPMNCR3wWMqypTn8xs7qztC1JYEIqSBGI8Ny6cuLuhp12zRzueGbZ3zPVlo/s640/2015-09-03+14.09.47.jpg" width="480" /> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I sketched out the details that I wanted to include. The scale of the details are much small to create the ocean scene. I backed all the piece with fusible webbing and ironed them in place after I got them arranged in a way that I liked. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2baLz6l3GlCxRkwfkC2L5JcPs-cyvVv7iyoA-HuJkk47kptlqqqdQK2KlP7i35YhEIghP0ioK67Q0dl-0vLYtZp6E_cmBqcd18fhLjqthuA9kbIxCwaBrpCnRbNBNaY20Wk9Zo0mZIPE/s1600/2015-10-09+10.56.01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2baLz6l3GlCxRkwfkC2L5JcPs-cyvVv7iyoA-HuJkk47kptlqqqdQK2KlP7i35YhEIghP0ioK67Q0dl-0vLYtZp6E_cmBqcd18fhLjqthuA9kbIxCwaBrpCnRbNBNaY20Wk9Zo0mZIPE/s400/2015-10-09+10.56.01.jpg" width="300" /></a><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPpGMcz-iQVS_FDCNd2YEfD1HQURGkgL8nWASbVYgA2m3GYvAgfShR2P2OJ5IOoU5iWUj5Ux9OBtlPa8qr5Y7TLWKyO28xkJdCp3_ZlfoXR8iLL_Z534iiXlhJ_lH3Jv5ZCbykhxIlhWw/s400/2015-09-24+11.53.54.jpg" width="300" /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I happened to have a Day Sail charm pack by Bonnie and Camille out on my sewing table when I was creating this mini and the little sail boats were perfect for this mini. I used several of the other prints to help with the details of the lighthouse and mermaid's tail.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
As promised...my next catch up post. This one is about the most recent mini quilt I completed.<br />
<br />
The was a Sea mini swap...so ocean creatures and colors. After seeing my partner's inspiration pictures and reading all her answers on the sign up form. I knew it had to be a mermaid. I try very hard to make sure that what I make for my partners is
thoughtful and heartfelt. I want them to feel special when they open
their packages. Sometimes that means make a pattern that already exists and sometime that mean something original.<br />
<br />
So I started with a fabric pull...blues to represent the sea...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBnA0BWoBxqw9QxrgMQNtTmFHVmfZlDt1FvZEdSNa3JTON6PC7XT2rvDQc36NAFUdsum6v9_O8ZKssEU8ZcbfqgkhSO0Ca7-rEQ8OLwZQzuhF1iR5W1epdE_xujnTiMDOaxGRVMWyTCzc/s400/IMG_20170526_164504.jpg" width="300" /> </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A few years ago, while we still lived in Alaska, I checked out a book by Jean Wells called Intuitive Color and Design. She uses a technique where you overlap two strips of fabric, free hand cut a gentle curved line and then sew the strips together. I used this method to create the background for my mermaid.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="646" data-original-width="646" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj10kwW9_X-3TTuM11hD3jw-gsXtuzakZtge4ow9dvAk2e5Y0_BnK4m2TTL4soTLS_wdSZY_xOQoCwgKOE_D74rXlTQgTTm6hyYCWdV8aYf01JebGGk0zUvjjLdIl8fxYHWqUuAd2ldBsg/s400/IMG_20170530_142734_488.jpg" width="400" /></div>
After completing the background I got busy sketching up my mermaid, scanned her into the computer and printed out several different sizes. I ultimately went with the one in the upper left because I felt like she was the most proportional to the water.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="1520" data-original-width="1520" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIVL2lxRVxU04qOF8rsHyHel_o1jpCP3Ih7K_8TDvXvXXBMCswcfIdoDk4ah6XTVaF9AklK6P4aXBP6vALgXZZ8dxVa1YFMkMIseAoQzDvpV_pf2NfUgg6HAxzve2UA8jz3towYeXJiiU/s400/IMG_20170501_110402-COLLAGE.jpg" width="400" /> </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the picture below you can see a collection of scraps that I used to create my mermaid. Her hair, face and arm are fused on to the background with Pellon Lite EZ-Steam II. With this particular fusible you can remove one side and stick the fabric on before you fuse it. The hair was a bit labor intensive as I cut every little piece and attached it to the fusible web after I had drawn all the shapes on the back. That allowed me to attach it as one large piece to the water without having to line up all the tiny strips and even though the fusible created a permanent bond I did stitch around every single bit of her hair to create more movement. I starched the fabric for the tail and tacked it on with a fabric glue stick before sewing it down. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="1152" data-original-width="1152" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEip1jMFa7lvNid_ifGl36gtwq_GgLmQX21CJFwbaDKk-X5zIEaKchS1W98sdfVWbtlwHCJ0LOrJL29J-dw6Fyp0HgLKgWQswi-HiCw-gpjRbuC0M5POHmjcSCDXhkX8VWnm1atHDH9H9Hc/s400/IMG_20170605_153519_327.jpg" width="400" /></div>
For the quilting I just did wavely lines that mimicked the curves in the background and outlined the mermaid so that she would stand out a bit.. I also did a it of embroidery to add details to her face.<br />

Heather OBrienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02919379139267163519noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6922883411059372660.post-68249494183957371982017-07-29T17:30:00.001-07:002017-10-06T16:55:42.650-07:00 Hello again...I realize that things have been really quiet around here but that doesn't mean I have been making. Quite the opposite in fact! I have made a lot (and shared on instagram) but when it came to
sharing it here I kept putting it off and then I felt like I couldn't
share because the projects were old news. But I have decided to go back
and share the things I've made...the mini quilts for swaps, the market
sewing, the quilts for my kids, the clothes...because this place is a
record for me, where I have more details about my projects than you can
find in a small square picture.<br />
<br />
So, without further procrastination here is the first of several post to share what has been made.<br />
<br />
This past spring I had the opportunity to meet <a href="http://nanacompany.typepad.com/nanacompany/" target="_blank">Amy Sinibaldi</a>. She and her family had recently relocated to Virginia and I had reached out to welcome them because I know what it's like to move across country and begin the process of getting settled in a new community. I was honored when she asked me to sew up a couple of knit garments for her Quilt Market booth. Amy created Art Gallery's first holiday line, which you can see more of in the <a href="https://issuu.com/artgalleryfab/docs/littletown_by_amy_sinibaldi?utm_source=Consumers&utm_campaign=fe8121ead2-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_07_17&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_1a74121c03-fe8121ead2-147285165" target="_blank">Little Town Lookbook.</a><br />
<br />
Since I was working with knits and I knew it was a holiday inspired line, I looked for patterns that I could imagine a my daughter wearing while opening Christmas presents. I found a pattern for some <a href="http://www.sewcanshe.com/blog/2015/10/10/basic-leggings-for-girls-free-pattern-and-tutorial" target="_blank">super simple leggings</a> on SheCanSew.com. The pink pair are a size 4 and with only one pattern piece they were a breeze to put to. The blue pair with the cute little faces are a size 2 that had to be shortened a bit due to limited fabric, so I added ribbed knit cuffs for a bit of detail. <br />

I'm not sure how I found this cute <a href="http://www.sewmuchado.com/2015/02/girls-peplum-top-free-pattern.html" target="_blank">peplum top</a> but it is also a free pattern that can be found on Sewmuchado.com. I made a 12-18 month size which is a free pattern but Abby the patterns designer does have some adorable paid patterns including a similar peplum in larger sizes.</div>

</div>
This is project #3 on <a href="http://acreativepursuit.blogspot.com/2016/01/2016-finish-long-q1-list.html" target="_blank">my finish-a-long list</a>. It is my On Point quilt made from Wee Wander by Sarah Jane. This quilt is destined for my daughter's bed. I purchased the fabric last spring and cut all the blocks, but stalled when it came to assembly. When I finally sat down to work on this quilt, it came together pretty quickly.<br />

The only problem was that our current house is so small, I didn't have much room to lay it out. As you can see it took up most of the floor. <br />

I joined the Finish-a-Long to help keep myself focused and accountable this year. My first finish was my Dot Party quilt. I can't find any record of when I actually started this quilt but I do know that I basted it together in January of 2015. <img border="0" height="427" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzbzEuof_UcojOz4L1e-Vhc7i2Wql9gGSLKn8yeiPqgFh6u_xHX39SDk2OSwLRaPwWwmnNoQdSIw_F9mtBW_iQ-nnJQqNdsc5qL2rRwG8Zzaae5DkH90_5rN-jWjeVcpnUIAi1I7pGikk/s640/DSC_0241.JPG" width="640" /></div>
The fabric was a layer cake called Oz by Momo and it't long out of print. I'm almost positive that I bought it from Natalia of Piece'n'Quilt back when she still had a small online shop. She was actually one of the first bloggers I ever followed.<br />

The back of this quilt might actually be my favorite. I love how all the colors stand out against the black and the improv nature of it.<br />

Although a bit washed out, I think this picture shows off the quilting and variegated thread pretty well.<br />

The finished quilt measures about 45" square. These are blocks #5 - <a href="http://www.thesplendidsampler.com/2016/02/28/block-5-simple-simon/" target="_blank">Simple Simon</a> and #6 - <a href="http://www.thesplendidsampler.com/2016/03/03/block-6-focal-point/" target="_blank">Focal Point</a> in the Splendid Sampler. I spend sometime last week sorting all my scraps in to bins that organize them by shape...strips, squares and triangles. While I was at it I picked out what I wanted to use for these blocks and a couple of others. Both went together pretty quickly. All the blocks that have be released so far have been fantastic but I've decided to only make the ones that I'm drawn to the most. I want this to be a fun, relaxing, no pressure project.Heather OBrienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02919379139267163519noreply@blogger.com0
