Clementine Quilt-a-long

Can you believe that 2017 is swiftly coming to an end?  Christmas is only a week away and the new year is coming faster than I'd like!  I thought I'd better pop in and let you know that I'll be quilting along with the Fat Quarter Shop on their 2018 charity quilt.   The Clementine Quilt is a stunning sampler quilt with fun blocks in varying sizes.  It runs from January to July 2018, with all the proceeds going to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

I thought you might be interested in seeing what I'm going to be working with...

I've loved every quilt I've seen made from V & Co's beautiful ombre fabric but this is the first time that I'll be sewing with it.  And I'll admit to being a bit giddy about it.  I'm excited to see how it works with the block in this pattern.  The Bella White is going to be my background fabric and the chambray is the boarders and accent fabric used to set the small blocks on point.

I may have had a bit too much fun photographing these fabrics...so lots of pictures!

Cobblestone Stone Quilt with Fat Quarter Shop

The team over at the Fat Quarter Shop is at it again!  This time with another quilt in their Shortcut Quilt series.  The newest pattern, the Cobblestone quilt, is fat quarter friendly and a great way to show off your favorite prints. 

When it came time to choose what fabric I wanted to use, there was no question for me.  I knew it had to be Sweetwater's Hometown Christmas line.  To say I'm a fan of their designs would be a bit of an understatement.  Of the finished quilts in my house 3 are made from fabric they've designed, including one from their other Christmas line.  One of the things I enjoy about the way they design is the input they get from our quilting community.

The quilt comes together quickly and leaves hardly any scraps.  My quilt finished at about 63" x 80"  and is going to a great size for my whole family to snuggle under this winter.

 

I did simple straight line quilting to start with and I'm planning to go back and add some hand quilting in 12 wt. thread.  Not exactly sure but I'm thinking maybe some snowflakes or little trees. I love this binding fabric.  It finished the quilt off perfectly.

 

Simple Sampler Quilt - My Spring 2015 BQF entry

 
So, it seems fitting that this quilt would make its debut during Blogger's Quilt Festival . The blocks were made during the summer of 2010 when Amy hosted her Simple Sampler Quilt Along.  I was a brand new quilter and they were a great way to gain confidence and practice the basic block piecing.  The blocks were some of my first post on this blog.  After the blocks were made and the top was pieced together, it sat for a long time.  I didn't have backing for it or the confidence to quilt it.  I don't enjoy free motion quilting on my machine and I couldn't seem to come up with any ideas for all over straight-ish line quilting.  Once I decided that each block was going to be different I had lots of fun coming up with ideas. I used a varigated 50 wt Aurifil that has red, yellow, navy and aqua in all the blocks and a gray that matched the sashing. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I bought this great zigzag print from Fabric Depot around Christmas time and it works perfectly with all the colors in the blocks.

This is the most incredible collaborative project ever!  Back in March I joined with a group of ladies on Instagram to start a group of traveling quilts.  I made the first two blocks and sent them off, since then the have traveled all over the US and Canada to become this beautiful quilt top that I received back yesterday.   Over the last several months I had only seen small peaks at what they other ladies were adding and I was so excited when I picked up the box it arrived in at the post office last night. This beauty is big...measuring in at 84"x 68".  I had to bring in a ladder to get a good picture of the whole thing and it took up my whole living room floor!

Blogger's Quilt Festival - Sweet as Honey

I finished this quilt in June.  It is made from a bundle of Sweet as Honey fabric I won from Hawthorne Threads.  The pattern was designed by Amanda from Westwood Acres. 

It is absolutely beautiful fabric, so soft! 

I used a very basic zigzag stitch to quilt it.

Sweet As Honey

 

Have you ever wondered who all those lucky people are that win Hawthorne Thread's newsletter giveaways?  Yeah...I did too...until it was me!  Back in February I won their drawing for fat quarters of Sweet As Honey by Bonnie Christine.  When it came time for them to ship the fabric, they only had the Autumn colorway in stock, so they generously let me pick some yardage to go along with it.  I ended up with half yard cuts in 5 prints.

Once it arrived, I knew almost immediately what I wanted to make!  That's a rare thing around here... unless I'm buying fabric specifically for a project.  I decided to use a pattern I had just gotten called Shiny Bright that was designed by Amanda Woodruff of Westwood Acres Fabric.  The pattern is very well written and went together quickly. 

 

I used one of my machines built in stitches to quilt horizontal rows across the quilt.

 

The back was pieced together with the half yard cuts I received.  I love the way it shows of the prints!

When I started making the quilt I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it.  I know there is no such thing as too many quilts, but there are several around here already and several more in the works.  I decided to gift the quilt to an incredible woman I know, who until recently was my husband's commanding officer.  She genuinely cared about her crew and their families.  She went out of her way to make all the kids feel special and even had picture my kids made for her hanging in her stateroom. I felt that it was important to do something to show how much I had appreciated and respected her.

Rain Drops Mini

The second round of the Schnitzle & Boo Mini Quilt Swap is wrapping up.  There were over 600 people participating this round...amazing!  That means 1200 mini quilts are flying around the world, landing in mailboxes and making lots of people smile!  This is a secret swap, so the recipient of the mini I made didn't know I was making it for her until it arrived in her mailbox.   

 

This is the fabric I pulled from my stash for my partner.  The raindrop print was perfect for tying everything together.  I picked four blocks from Tula Pink's City Sampler book, that really worked well to show off the fabrics.

Here's the front and the back...as you can tell the rain drop print was really the focal point.  I made sure when I was cutting that I would always have them going the same direction.

I was just a bit short on the turquoise print I used for the binding but I'm really happy with the way that bit of pink finished it off.

I don't FMQ well, so I chose to quilt around  some of the shaped created by the piecing and a few of the rain drops in the Tula print.

I included a couple of extra goodies...including a pouch for sunglasses, a roll of washi tape and a great pad of post it graph paper.
